Scholarships
The Kure Beach Fire Department offers two separate scholarships on an annual basis, with more information on each below:
1.) The Kure Beach Fire Department Relief Fund Scholarship
2.) The Mike Robertson Memorial Scholarship
The Mike Robertson Memorial Scholarship
The Kure Beach Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors voted to establish the Mike Robertson Memorial Scholarship in October of 2022, in memory of Mike Robertson, lifelong local of Kure Beach, firefighter, fire department Treasurer, and owner of the Kure Beach Pier. The scholarship was created to recognize students in financial need that also demonstrate a strong work ethic and service to the Town of Kure Beach, and benefits those that either work or volunteer within the Town limits of Kure Beach or its Extraterrestrial Jurisdictions (Fort Fisher).
Eligibility:
- Full time student OR be a part time student and working at least 20 hours per week.
- Currently (or within the last calendar year) employed OR volunteer for any organization or company within the Kure Beach town limits and its extraterrestrial jurisdiction (Fort Fisher)
- Must possess a 2.5 GPA
Process:
- Fill out the scholarship application and return to the Fire Chief Ed Kennedy no later than December 31st via email at e.kennedy@tokb.org
- Complete an essay from the prompt below with the following requirements and submit to the Fire Chief via email no later than the last day of February at 5 PM.
o 12 Font Times New Roman, Double Spaced
o Min 1000 words, Max 5000 words
o Title Page
- Submit a letter of recommendation with your essay from your employer, supervisor, or organizational leader stating how you have demonstrated the characteristics within the spirit of the scholarship: hard work, dedication, and service to the Town of Kure Beach in any capacity no later than the last day of February at 5PM. The letter of recommendation should also be emailed to the Fire Chief.
- All essays and letters of recommendation will be reviewed by a Scholarship Selection Committee, selected by the Kure Beach Fire Department Board of Trustees on an annual basis.
Two winners will be selected to receive the $1,500 and $1,000 scholarship

The Kure Beach Fire Department Relief Fund Scholarship
The Kure Beach Fire Department Relief Fund Scholarship was created in 2020 by the Fire Department Relief Fund, and is used to support firefighters of the Kure Beach Fire Department, and/or their children with educational expenses.
Eligibility:
- Must be a member of the Kure Beach Fire department or a child of a member of the Kure Beach Fire Department.
- Must be currently attending a university or technical college, or signed up to attend.
- Must possess a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing, or a B Average
Process:
- Fill out the application and return to the Fire Chief Ed Kennedy no later than December 31st
- Complete essay from the prompt below with the following requirements and submit to the Fire Chief Ed Kennedy no later than the last day of February at 5:00 P.M.
o 12 Font Times New Roman, Double Spaced
o Min 1500 words, Max 5000 words
o Title Page
- All essays will be reviewed by paid staff. Final 3 will be reviewed by the Fire Chief
- 2 Winner will be selected to receive the $1,500 and $1,000 scholarship upon receipt of school acceptance letter/upcoming class schedule.
