UPDATE FROM THE EMERGENCY MANAGER

Tuesday, January 21, 2025 - 2:49pm

Kure Beach Residents,

The National Weather Service is continuing to  forecast a significant Winter event for our town. Extremely low temperatures are forecast beginning tonight and extending through the rest of the week, with the potential of 2-4” of snow this evening through Wednesday morning. With this type of event, please be aware of the potential for hazardous road conditions this evening, and then potentially Wednesday morning. Note in the updated graphic below that the forecast for Hazardous Road conditions have increased.

Kure Beach and New Hanover County do not treat our roadways and therefore it is recommended to minimize travel to only necessary trips in the event of precipitation. On the late evenings and early mornings during this week be especially aware of the potential for BLACK ICE as travel will melt any precipitation in the day hours and then it will freeze as temperatures drop.

Elevated surfaces (including beach accesses and outside home stairways) represent a high risk potential with snow and/or ice and additional caution is recommended.

Fortunately the National Weather service is forecasting this to be a snow vs ice event, which reduces the chance of power outages.

Plants and animals should be taken inside and for any non-insolated water pipes (outside shower, connected outside hoses, poorly isolated external walls) the piping should be drained or insulated to prevent bursting.

Town Staff have completed Town preparations for this event today.

TRASH PICK UP:

On Wednesday we will plan to pick up trash on a delayed schedule based on the road conditions. The landfill will not reopen until 1pm on Wednesday and if the roads are bad we will not put trucks out until they improve.

TOWN HALL HOURS OF OPERATION:Town Hall will plan to open Wednesday at 12:00pm if conditions allow. Council will review conditions Wednesday morning. If icy conditions exist on entry ways to Town Hall, to protect citizens and staff office hours will be adjusted accordingly.

Respectfully –
