UPDATE FROM THE EMERGENCY MANAGER

Monday, January 20, 2025 - 2:16pm

Kure Beach Residents,

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting a significant Winter event for our town. Extremely low temperatures are forecast beginning tonight and extending through the rest of the week, with the potential of 1-2” of snow tomorrow afternoon through Wednesday morning. With this type of event, please be aware of the potential for hazardous road conditions tomorrow evening, and then potentially Wednesday morning.

Kure Beach and New Hanover County do not treat our roadways and therefore it is recommended to minimize travel to only necessary trips in the event of precipitation. On the late evenings and early mornings during this week be especially aware of the potential for BLACK ICE as travel will melt any precipitation in the day hours and then it will freeze as temperatures drop.

Plants and animals should be taken inside and for any non-insolated water pipes (outside shower, connected outside hoses, poorly isolated external walls) the piping should be drained or insulated to prevent bursting.

Below is the latest National Weather Service update graphic and the full briefing can be found at:

Town Staff will have completed Town preparations for this event by noon tomorrow – prior to the forecast arrival of precipitation.

TRASH PICK UP:

We will pick up trash tomorrow morning (South side) per the holiday plan. On Wednesday we will plan to pick up trash on a delayed schedule based on the road conditions. The landfill will not reopen until 1pm on Wednesday and if the roads are bad we will not put trucks out until they improve.

TOWN HALL HOURS OF OPERATION:

Town Hall will be open on Tuesday from 9:00 am to 12:00pm and will reopen on Wednesday at 12:00pm.

Respectfully –
David W. Heglar, PE
